Ralph E. Kleinman Prize

Established in 1998 in memory of Ralph E. Kleinman, the prize recognizes contributions that bridge the gap between high-level mathematics and engineering problems. The award is based on the quality and impact of the mathematics.

Prize Description


Prize Description

The Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded every two years to one individual for outstanding research or other contributions that bridge the gap between mathematics and applications. Work that uses high-level mathematics and/or invents new mathematical tools to solve applied problems from engineering, science, and technology is particularly appropriate.


Eligibility Criteria

The prize may be awarded for a single notable achievement or for a collection of such achievements.


Required Materials

  • Nominator’s letter of recommendation for candidate
  • Candidate’s CV
  • Two or three letters of support from experts in the field

About the Award


About the Ralph E. Kleinman Prize


The Ralph E. Kleinman Prize includes a $5,000 monetary prize and a certificate. SIAM will reimburse the recipient for reasonable travel expenses incurred in attending the award ceremony.

Award Date

The Ralph E. Kleinman Prize will next be awarded at the 2025 SIAM Annual Meeting.


Award Presentation

The prize will be presented by the SIAM President at the Prizes and Awards Luncheon. The announcement of the award will appear in SIAM News, the SIAM website, and appropriate electronic media.


Award Fund

The initial funds for this prize were contributed by family and friends of Ralph E. Kleinman.

The 2023 Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded to Thomas Yizhao Hou for highly original and pioneering research contributions positioned at the meeting point between analytical and computational approaches to partial differential equations with multiscale or singular behavior.

The 2021 Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded to Thomas J.R. Hughes for his influential and profound contributions to computational science and engineering and their impact on engineering design and simulation, while creating entirely new fields of mathematical research.

The 2019 Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded to Andrea L. Bertozzi for her groundbreaking research in partial differential equations, image processing, numerical analysis, scientificcomputing, mathematical data science, and the application of mathematics to problems in the physical, life, and social sciences.

The 2017 Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded to Emmanuel Candès for fundamental breakthroughs in information theory, signal processing, imaging, computational harmonic analysis, and their applications to daily life problems in engineering and in physical and biomedical sciences.

The 2013 Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded to Anna C. Gilbert for her creative and deep contributions to the mathematics of signal processing, data analysis and communications. Her bold and interdisciplinary work combines techniques from computer science, harmonic analysis and probability in the best traditions of the Kleinman Prize.
